Having been through high school in NSW, Australia, in the 00’s, all the nods to pop culture and teen life made it a very nostalgic and delightful read! As a 26yo I often feel self conscious about reading YA and when they make me feel old it increases ten fold, and this book with all its facebook chatting and abbreviations could have done that very quickly but it didnt.Īs the first book in a series featuring faires, both seelie and unseelie, and changlings, it was a great read that only reflected myth and lore keeping the story line very unique. Upon beginning the book it is quite odd and completely different from any other book I have read, but by the end of the first chapter it was just like I was back in high school and completely second nature! The never ending sentences, mind freaks outs and emotional doubts bring to life the character of Pearl more realistically then a book with “proper” use of the English language could. The debut novel of Author Jodi McAlister is written in teen language complete with facebook chats. Valentine is a refreshingly new YA paranormal set in Australia.
